Successful in a four-way fight – the 2027 World Figure Skating Championships will be held in Switzerland – Sports

  • The Alpine Ski World Championships 2027 will be held in Crans-Montana.
  • This decision was announced on Wednesday at the FIS conference in Milan.
  • The Valais prevailed in a four-way battle against Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Ger), Narvik (North), and Söldo (W).

The 1987 Alpine Ski World Championships in Crans-Montana was a veritable fest for Switzerland. 8 out of 10 gold medals remained in the host country. Exactly 40 years later, the Ski World Cup returns to the Valais ski resort.

On Wednesday, Kranz’s nomination received 11 votes to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (3), Narvik (3) and Soldeu (1). Switzerland’s victory was not necessarily expected, as the majority position on the FIS board of directors around President Johan Elias seemed very unclear early on.

“Getting the 2027 World Championship is a reward for the excellent work done by the entire team over the past few years. Our candidacy was very strong and compelling because everyone, from the local community to canton Valais and Swiss Ski, came together. We also enjoyed the broad support of mountain railways. and population,” analyzed Urs Lehmann, President of Swiss-Ski, an activist on the Nominating Committee.

All good things come in two seconds

Kranz had already applied for the 2025 World Championship two years ago, but was at a disadvantage compared to Saalbach-Hinterglemm (AUT). It worked on the second try.

In addition to supporting all relevant bodies, Crans Montana was able to point out other advantages, such as the experience it has gained in hosting the Women’s World Cup races over the past decade and a half. In addition, the ski runs “Nationale” and “Mont-Lachaux” have been extensively renovated and expanded in recent years.

This will be the tenth time that the World Cup will be held in Switzerland. Most recently, medals were contested here in St. Moritz in 2017.

The following world championships were also awarded on Wednesday:

  • Snowboarding Trip 2026: Oberstdorf (GER)
  • Freestyle Ski 2027: Montafon (Australia)
  • Nordic Ski 2027: Falun (Sweden)
