USA Record: 14-year-old gets a professional contract
01/15/2022 07:22
14-year-old soccer talent Axl Key has become the youngest athlete in US history to be awarded a professional contract. The Ivory Coast-born American has signed MLS team Real Salt Lake on a two-year deal.
- At 14 years and 15 days old, Kei beat Freddy Adu’s previous best performance by 153 days. Adu joined DC United in January 2004, also at MLS.
- General Manager Elliot Fall said: “Last year Axel proved to be one of the nation’s stormiest talents. In front of goal, he behaves very calmly for his age. Combined with his athletic fitness, he promises to be a target. Guarantor in the coming years to be in our league.”
- Key was raised in Brazil where his father played professional football. In 2017, at the age of nine, he moved to San Diego with his family. Last October, at the age of thirteen, he made his debut with the Real Monarchs, an MLS junior team, becoming the youngest player in the history of professional team sports in the USA.
