youth football C-Juniors from Sportfreunde Neersbroich participated in a friendly match with the Boston Bolts from the USA. The contact was made by a former junior player at the club.
‘First touch’, ‘keep on’, ‘keep possession’. It was the unusual commands that reverberated across the field at Sportfreunde Neersbroich last week. American coaching duo Boston Bullets were responsible for these instructions. With a small team of footballers aged 14-15, the Bolts traveled from the US East Coast through Holland and Germany for a week – and at the end of their stay they stopped at Sportfreunde Neersbroich for a friendly match against C-juniors.
Before the match, the leaders exchanged scarves and emblems.

“Such an international friendly match against a team from America is an important event for our children,” said Udo Koch, president of Sportfreund FC. “Our U-15 coach Sasha Fahel was also excited about the idea and we brought 19 players together, even though the match was over the Easter holiday.”
Max Krause, a former young player at Sportfreunde Neersbroich, and his parents have put the Boston Bolts in touch. The 23-year-old grew up near the Neersbroicher facility and started playing soccer with sports fans before driving his way through 1. FC Mönchengladbach to Holy Cross College in Massachusetts. During breaks in the American College League, Krause also played in the so-called summer league – for the Boston Bullets.
On their journey across Europe, youngsters from the United States played a number of friendlies against Dutch youth teams. But the trip should cover more than just sports. “We took the players to the Dutch Cup final between Ajax and Eindhoven, visited Anne Frank’s house and organized meetings with other youngsters,” said Jan Bruen, who planned the Boston Bullets trip.
“It is important to me that young people not only play football, but also enjoy socializing.” The visit to Sportfreunde Neersbroich was a perfect conclusion. “After the match, all the players and parents were invited to a barbecue at the facility,” says Udo Koch. “Our boys got into a conversation with players from America and exchanged ideas. It was definitely a great atmosphere.”
The Bolts also enjoyed their stay so much that they would like to return to Neersbroich with their youth teams in the future. Of course, sports fans have already been invited to the United States.
Mathematically speaking, the match became clear for the Boston Bullets, who won 5-1. “You can already tell that working in the US has been very good. I haven’t often seen such security on the ball and ability to play at that age,” chief Neersbroich praised the guests’ performance.
