Kjetil Jansrud (36) retires weekend alpine skiing. The 36-year-old Norwegian, Olympic champion in Sochi in 2014, has been one of the defining figures at the World Cup in recent years.
Jansrud announced via Instagram that getting off Kvitfjell on Saturday will be his last race. “A number of considerations led to this decision,” he explained, adding, “It’s not easy to end something you’ve done all your life.”
Jansrud made his World Cup debut in 2003 in Wengen in the slalom slalom. He then celebrated his greatest sprint success with an Olympic victory in the Super G in Sochi and the 2019 World Championships in downhill from AR. At the World Cup, where he has won 23 times, he won four small crystal balls – in 2015 at Downhill and in 2015, 2017 and 2018 in Super-G.
Surprise guest in Beijing
In the major events, Jansrud has more podium finishes with two silvers, two bronzes at the Olympics, and two silvers at the World Championships. Jansrud would have liked to continue this string of successes that began in Vancouver in 2010 in Beijing. After sustaining a serious knee injury in a fall at Beaver Creek in early December 2021, he returned just before the last Winter Games. But he had to finish 23rd in Super-G.
Jansrud humbly said goodbye to social media a few days before his last days: “In these difficult days, my resignation and this letter seem meaningless. My thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. Stay strong!” (SDA)
