With his performance, the Zurich singer brought the jury and audience to tears as the “human music box”.
What a liberation for Michael Wackerlin: He didn’t just win the cup and 100,000 francs in the Stadt Land Talent. For a semi-legal, this victory is also a dream come true.
From human music box to opera star
The 46-year-old was the last 12 talent at the last show and caused quite a surprise. After a few moments, he said goodbye to his usual role as the “human jukebox” and turned into a star in front of the backdrop of a big opera. A brave decision with which he wanted to prove that he had more than a musical comedian with a wide repertoire.
And the decision was rewarded: His classic interpretation of “Torna a Surriento” sent scout Stefanie Heinzmann into a valley of tears, and even Jonny Fischer was so moved he couldn’t find any words. The studio audience celebrated Michael Wackerlin with standing ovations and television viewers rewarded him with 30.19% of the total vote.
You touch me so deeply that I can hardly recover.
Presenter Viola Tammy summed up Michael Wackerlin’s story in a few words after his performance: “For you, this performance here is so much more than just participating in a talent show. It goes so deep with you and you want to show that you deserve to be here.” “It touched me so deeply that I could hardly recover,” said juror Johnnie Fisher.
The unfulfilled dream of an opera singer
For the past 14 years, Michael Wackerlin, an associate at a law firm, has been cruising around tents and bars. As “The Human Jukebox”, where you can pick your favorite track from a collection of 250 songs – from pop to rap to classical. Wäckerlin actually wanted to be an opera singer and had his voice trained at La Scala in Milan. But the dream of an opera career did not come true.
Michael Wackerlin appeared as “The Human Jukebox” in the first talent show, “Stadt Land Talent”. With the winning ESC hit “Rise Like a Phoenix” he brought Johnny Fisher to tears. However, he only made it to the final match thanks to a wildcard.
43 talents, 3 hours and 1 winner
The live finale kicked off with a grand opening with all 43 talents, including world champions and retirees, strongwomen and artists. People you meet in everyday life at university, in a law firm or in a retirement home. After about three hours, three music acts decided to win among themselves: singers from Mixed Flames from Zurich, Emmental Hard Rock-Out Rock-Out and eventual winner Michael Wäckerlin.
Since the beginning of March, talent scouts Stephanie Heinsmann, Luca Haney and Johnny Fischer have been looking for the greatest talents at three talent shows. Twelve finalists from the categories “Music”, “Dance” and “Variety” fought for the audience in the live final.
