The defeat could have been much greater. Not only did Servette get off to a miserable start and were 2-0 down after 15 minutes, the Geneva side had more than half an hour to play. David Doolin, who had already been booked once in each of the two matches against Genk, was sent off with a second yellow card in the 60th minute.

For the 30-year-old midfielder, it was the fitting end to a botched match. In the fifth minute, the Frenchman lost the ball in his team’s penalty area. During the next attempted save, he entered the duel aggressively and was responsible for the penalty kick that led to the early deficit.

Ten minutes later, the entire Grenats defense looked weak. Firstborn Borna Barisic enjoyed too much time on the side due to his cross down the middle, as Cyril Desires was left on his own and only had to take a knee.

The Scots then had several chances to score more goals. However, either the accuracy was lacking or goalkeeper Joel Mull, who once again replaced injured captain Jeremy Fricke, got in the way. The 32-year-old was particularly able to excel in the 54th minute when he defended a close-range shot with his fingertips.

Servetian’s potentially important goal came out of nowhere. Just before the break, the VAR called the referee to the touchline. On the screen, he saw the ball hit the hand of a Rangers player in the penalty area, and thus pointed to the penalty spot. From this, top scorer Chris Bedia was reigning supreme as usual.

With a score of 1: 2, Geneva keeps the chances of getting into the Champions League playoffs open. On Tuesday, August 15, the second leg will be played at Stade Geneva.

Haifa wins the duel of potential YB opponents

In the duel to determine the opponent Young Boys playoff, win Maccabi Haifa away against Slovan Bratislava 2-1. The three goals came in the first quarter of an hour of the match. This put the Israeli champions in a good position for the second leg, which will be played in Haifa on August 15th.
