Elza Soares (91) died of natural conditions at her home in Rio, according to a post on the artist’s Instagram account. “The singer moved the world with her voice, strength and determination.”
Soares, who has mixed samba, jazz, electro, hip-hop and funk and has released more than 30 albums, is considered one of the greatest singers in Brazil. At Rio Carnival 2020, Samba School “Mocidade” honored her with her own show at the Sambodrome.
She is 13 years old, she is 21, a widow
Born in a poor neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Elsa Soares married at 12, became a first-time mother at 13 and a widow at 21. Soares was asked which planet she came from on the radio in 1953 when she started composing music.
Her famous answer was “From the Hunger Planet”, which also gave her 34th and final album “Planeta Fome” from 2019 its name.
In 1959, the woman with a harsh singing style made significant progress, and in the 1960s she established herself as one of the leading samba interpreters in the country. For many years Soares held the title of “Queen of the Samba”, although she never limited her to this.
feminist icon
Elza Soares sang into her old age and became a feminist icon in the process. Concerts such as the “Planeta Fome” show at the “Circo Voador” in Rio 2019 were events, semi-statements, in which social and racial structures were criticized.
In private, Soares made headlines because of her relationship with superstar Garrincha, who left her family after the 1962 World Cup in Chile because of her. Brazilian media reported that Garrincha also died on January 20, 1983. (SDA)
