Resigned US lawmaker: Trump committed ‘multiple crimes’
The former anti-mafia attorney general in Manhattan who investigated Donald Trump’s financial dealings wrote in his resignation statement that he believed the former president was “guilty of numerous crimes.”
US Attorney Mark Pomerantes said he resigned due to former President Donald Trump’s failure to sue him. Pomerants, who led investigations into Trump’s finances in New York, accused the former president of being “guilty of numerous crimes,” according to his statement Wednesday. The New York Times published a letter of resignation Shows. Pomerantz wrote that the new Manhattan District Attorney’s decision not to pursue the prosecution “contradicts the public interest.”
The investigation was initiated by Attorney General Cyrus Vance. Vance was replaced by Alvin Bragg in January. Pomerantz has now accused him of not pursuing the investigation.
When Dunn and Pomerants resigned in February, a spokesperson for the attorney general said the investigation was “ongoing.” The New York Times reported that Bragg told his staff that the case could only proceed if there was new evidence or someone close to Trump decided to testify against the former president.
“This position will nullify any future possibilities that Mr. Trump will be prosecuted for the criminal conduct that we have investigated,” Pomerantz wrote in his resignation letter. The 75-year-old former Republican president has yet to be personally charged with his business practices. He has repeatedly described the allegations as a “political manhunt” by Democratic prosecutors.
