Report: Microsoft plans a new release cycle for Windows

It provides up to four feature updates each year. In addition, a new major version of Windows will appear every three years. Microsoft refers only to the current regulation, which provides for an annual major functional update.

Looks like Microsoft is working on one new strategy To deliver new functionality and major updates to the Windows operating system. as such Windows Central Reports suggest that in the future users will get new functionality up to four times a year in order to bridge the time between two major releases – which will in turn be delivered for three years.

In recent years, Microsoft has changed the Windows release cycle several times. Originally, Windows 10 was supposed to be the last version of Windows; Microsoft wanted to update twice a year. Then the two feature updates each year became one major update and one yearly minor update, until Windows 11 was finally introduced.

Microsoft then announced an annual update for the new major release. Recently, the software company introduced an additional option to introduce new functions in addition to the series – the company took advantage of this option for the first time in February.

Microsoft refers to the current update regulations

According to the report, quarterly updates are scheduled to be released over the next year as part of a strategy called Moments. A new client version of Windows will follow in 2024. Sources from ZDNet.com at least confirm the initial codename for this major release: Next Valley follows Windows 11 aka Sun Valley.

It is still unclear what the new update strategy will have for support periods for individual versions of Windows. For businesses in particular, it’s important that you receive security patches from Microsoft even if you decide not to install quarterly feature updates.

A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment on the Windows Central report when asked by ZDNet.com. He only referred to options introduced in February to introduce new Windows functionality and current regulations for annual functionality updates.

This year’s feature update for Windows 11, version 22H2, is expected in the fall. An update to Windows 10 22H2 should also be available during this period.
