Perhaps if you want to better understand Nadja “Nadja” Tolokonnikova in her extreme nature, you need to know where she came from. Norilsk is the northernmost city in the world and some of the dirtiest. Nearly 180,000 people live here on the other side of the Arctic Circle, and many of them work for Nornickel, one of the world’s largest mining companies. The photos show gray blocks of apartments, industrial chimneys and pipelines. From the end of November to the middle of January, it never lights up, and there is also freezing cold with minus double-digit temperatures. Not surprisingly, the city was originally constructed by convicts. It is a place of ruin, deprivation and loneliness. “Norilsk – No Fun” was the title of a description. This is exactly where Nadja Tolokonnikova grew up.
