Video from the ABC broadcaster on Monday showed the plane skidding down the runway at Newcastle Airport before finally coming to a stop. The 53-year-old pilot mastered the belly landing “like a textbook,” the New South Wales State Police quoted him as saying. The pilot and a couple on board were unhurt.
According to news agency AAP, the light aircraft took off from Newcastle Airport, 125 kilometers north-east of Sydney, on Monday morning. After some time, the pilot noticed that the landing gear could no longer be extended. The 53-year-old circled the plane over the airport for several hours before landing to use up fuel and prevent an explosion. The cause of the landing gear failure was initially unclear. The Transport Safety Authority ATSP has launched an investigation.
