Piercing trends for 2023: In-ear ear piercings, lip piercings are over

At the beginning of the 2000s, it was eyebrow piercing that could not be surpassed in terms of coolness. A few years later a widened ear piercing followed Pierced lip or tongue. And 2023? This is how insightful trends develop

Of course, trends that you need a date for and that (hopefully) have given a lot of thought to changing more slowly than fashion or beauty. However, they are out there — some of them have even become real longtime favorites. Matthias reveals: “The piercings in the navel or in the nostrils keep coming back. They are definitely the most stung.”

Surprisingly, “the ratio of men and women is almost balanced.” Plus, an acquaintance from the 2000s dates back. “I haven’t had any eyebrow piercings in two years — and now the inquiries are coming back again.”

The return of hooligans can also be clearly felt in fashion. Mathias and his colleagues are happy: “We’ve seen a lot of infections from navel piercings in recent years caused by high-waisted jeans. Now, Where the pants sit lower againand complications decrease as well.”

The same goes for the ears

The so-called “coordinated ear” has been promoted for a number of years. Even with the larger jewelry chains, you can now purchase several sockets at the same time that are coordinated with each other.

Retreat is not yet in sight. “The trend is not necessarily new, but it is very variable. There are many ways to make ear piercings. They are not very noticeable and can be changed more frequently than anywhere else.”

Pay attention to this with ear piercings

There are a few things to consider when it comes to ear piercings. “You should definitely take your time,” says Matthias. “With the front helix at the top of the ear, for example, many people wear two or three plugs. I wouldn’t get them pierced in one sitting. Otherwise the risk of ignition is too high.”

The piercer also warns: “Ear cartilage is sensitive. Right now, you can no longer sleep on the piercing side. Therefore, very careful consideration must be given to having both sides pierced at the same time.” Skiing or regular visits to the pool are also not recommended: “After ear piercing, you need a two-to-three-week break from chlorine water. Tight helmets are also not helpful.”

These holes are decreasing

Where trends come in, others say goodbye. “Extreme tunneling in the ears is of course not a no-go — but demand has dropped dramatically,” Matthias notes. “Even with dermal anchors (editor’s note: piercings installed under the skin that only have one exit point) the hype is over because they grow over time.” And the piercer sees another trend in which there is less demand: the lower and upper lip are rarely pierced. It is most common in the middle of the lip.

With tongue piercings, only the direction has changed. “Vertical piercings are still in demand, but we also do many piercings that go directly through the tip of the tongue, the so-called snake-eye piercings.” When it comes to body jewelry, there’s still a maxim Matthias upholds: “The more extreme, the better.”
