Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga also spoke at the Summer Games in Tokyo on Friday in his White House conversation with US President Joe Biden. He had told Biden that he was determined to promote the Summer Olympics in Japan (July 23 to August 8) and Biden had offered his support for it.

In Japan, the planned hosting of the Summer Games is becoming more and more suspicious due to the increasing number of coronavirus infections.

“I told the president about my determination to make the Olympic Games and the Tokyo Paralympics a symbol of global unity this summer,” Suga said at a joint press conference with Biden at the White House. “President Biden once again expressed his support.”

The Games in Tokyo have already been postponed from last year to this summer due to the pandemic. The country’s health experts warn of excessive risks should an event occur. Even so, the organizers constantly stress that they are committed to the event. The Secretary-General of the ruling party had already announced on Thursday that cancellation is an option if the Corona crisis worsens.

Meanwhile, IOC President Thomas Bach has announced that he will visit Tokyo in May. The German will attend the torch relay ceremony in Hiroshima on May 17 and meet Suga. Japan’s Kyodo reports this and also that Bach is still behind the games.
