The young Sextner (ranked 16 in the world) faces Hungarian Morton Fusovic in the third round. The 30-year-old (ranked 78 in the world) was solid in the first two sets and beat Sinner 6:4. But the third set was to be the turning point of the match for the South Tyrolean.
Suddenly Sinner was advancing from point to point, and the Hungarian had nothing to resist. So Sinner won the third set 6:1 and the following set 6:2. A crucial fifth set went to Sextner 6-0.
World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece now awaits in the round of 16. Jannik Sinner has won only once in five fights so far.
Competition progress so far
In the first round, Sexten beat Britain’s Kyle Edmund (ranked 581st in the world) in three sets 6:4, 6:0 and 6:2. Argentina’s Tomás Martin Etcheverry (World No. 79) awaited in the second round. Sinner cleared this barrier in three sets with scores of 6:3, 6:2 and 6:2. Both games were played at the Melbourne Arena.
