The last few days have been comfortable. Nice temperatures, there are almost no clouds in the sky. But that changes this week. A heat wave is heading towards Switzerland. However, at the beginning of the week, this is not particularly noticeable. Monday and Tuesday are still moderate.
Hot days start on Wednesdays only. “So it must be hot at 30 degrees or more,” says Klaus-Marquardt. Weather News to consider.
Sweating is advertised – and how. “Depending on the weather model, it can get very hot on the weekend, that you can definitely go over the 35-degree mark,” Marquardt says. Some data even predict absolute temperature records for Switzerland.
“At worst, 40 degrees should be expected”
The cause of the extreme heat is the so-called low altitude depression on the Atlantic Ocean off the Iberian Peninsula. “By rotating counterclockwise, it sweeps very hot air from North Africa into Portugal and Spain,” Marquardt says. A few days later, this hot air also reaches Switzerland via France and Germany. Since no rain is expected during the next heat wave, according to Marquardt, the drought problem will continue to fester in Germany. But it will not be as dry as it is currently in the Po Valley in Italy.
Heat currents are expected to reach France and Germany early next week. “At worst, 40 degrees should be expected,” Marquardt says. But even Switzerland is not immune from rising temperatures. A peak with temperatures above 35 degrees is expected next week on Monday or Tuesday. In Basel, for example, between 37 and 38 degrees is quite possible.”
Destruction of up to 2,500 hectares of forest
However, it is not possible to say exactly how long the heat wave will last. “The models are not yet in complete agreement about the course, duration and extent of this.”
Meanwhile, Portugal is engulfed by dozens of fires. On Monday, the Civil Defense announced that 36 forest fires were ignited across the country. According to various estimates, between 2,000 and 2,500 hectares of forests have been destroyed in the popular holiday destination in the past few days. This corresponds to an area of about 2,800 to 3,500 football fields. Due to the increased risk of wildfires, the third highest state of emergency has been activated across the country since midnight, the government announced in Lisbon at the weekend.
The bushfire risk is fueled by a weeks-long drought that has dried up nature and a heat wave, temperatures sometimes exceeding 40 degrees, which began on Saturday and will continue until at least Thursday. (ced/SDA)
