Monthly figures from customs authorities – registration of a huge number of illegal border crossings – news

  • The number of illegal stays in Switzerland increased compared to the previous months and compared to the previous year.
  • The Federal Customs and Border Security Office (BAZG) recorded 3,468 cases in June – nearly 900 more than in May.
  • The increase is mainly due to migrants entering Switzerland illegally through the eastern border, BAZG wrote in a statement.

In June last year, the authorities registered 1,023 illegal stays, a year ago there were only 920 irregular immigration. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) attributes this to the restrictive measures taken by the coronavirus pandemic. This effect will disappear this year.

Escape by land or sea

For this year, the Department of Immigration and Asylum expects about 16,500 asylum applications. Those who request protection from Ukraine are not included in this. According to SEM, most asylum seekers in Europe come from Afghanistan, Syria and Venezuela. According to BAZG, the majority of people who immigrated to Switzerland illegally are Afghan citizens.

Compared to the previous year, the three routes across the Mediterranean were similar or less frequent, SEM wrote. More migrants than the previous year traveled on the Turkey-Italy route and on the Turkey-Greece sea route. However, migration from Turkey to Greece remains at a low level, the MWA wrote. The Turkish government is unlikely to open the border with Greece again.
