Missiles from North Korea – In response to America: North Korea continues its missile tests – News

  • According to reports from South Korea, North Korea once again launched two short-range missiles in the direction of the Sea of Japan.
  • The missiles were launched near the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.
  • With missile tests, North Korea is responding to criticism and reactions from the United States and South Korea.

North Korea, for the first time in five years, launched a medium-range ballistic missile over Japan toward the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday. Both the United States and NATO strongly condemned the test. In response, the United States and South Korea launched four surface-to-surface missiles toward the Sea of Japan on Wednesday.

The last time North Korea fired a missile at Japan in 2017, the country conducted a nuclear weapons test just days later. UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range, which, by design, could also carry a nuclear warhead.

South Korea announced Wednesday that the United States wants to return the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan to waters east of the Korean Peninsula. The ship arrived recently in September for its first visit to South Korea in nearly four years and participated in naval exercises between South Korean and US forces.

The aircraft carrier is expected to participate in another exercise with South Korea and Japan in international waters later today, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.

‘Dangerous provocation’

“North Korea’s continued missile launches is a serious provocation that threatens not only peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, but also the international community,” the South Korean military said.

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol said Thursday morning, according to Yonhap Agency, that his government will “comprehensively take care of the safety and life of the residents.”

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also condemned North Korea’s repeated missile launches as “totally unacceptable,” Kyodo News reported. The Japanese government has lodged a formal protest with the North Korean diplomatic mission in the Chinese capital through its embassy in Beijing.

Experts suspect a nuclear test

According to the South Korean Defense Ministry, North Korea is preparing to launch a submarine ballistic missile and an intercontinental ballistic missile. Experts also expect North Korea to conduct its first nuclear test since 2017 in the coming weeks.

However, the UN Security Council’s common position on North Korean missile launches is not in sight. According to diplomats, no agreement on a text was expected at an emergency meeting on Wednesday in New York. Accordingly, a proposal for a joint statement was blocked by China before the meeting.

Chinese Vice Ambassador Geng Shuang blamed the United States for North Korea’s behavior. In the past, Washington has not responded adequately to the country’s denuclearization measures. China is North Korea’s most important partner.
