Nürburgring. With a solid performance, HRT said goodbye to this year’s Nürburgring Endurance Series. Team Meuspath, who competes in the NLS under the name Haupt Racing Team Bilstein, ADAC Barbarossapreis finished 53rd in sixth place. The trio of drivers Manuel Metzger, Hubert Haupt and Patrick Asenheimer (all from Germany) drove the yellow and blue Mercedes-AMG GT3 to 10th place for the fourth time in a row.
- Haupt Racing Team Bilstein made the top 10 in the NLS farewell
- Clever stopping tactics enable Metzger, Haupt and Assenheimer to finish sixth
Dense fog that spread over the Nürburgring Nordschleife on Saturday morning delayed qualifying. I was over an hour late until the traffic lights turned green. The teams only had 45 minutes to determine the starting grid. Manuel Metzger managed the fastest lap of 20.83 km for the main race team Bilstein. His time was 7:58.969 minutes meaning the 10th starting position.
It was Metzger who started the eighth four-hour race of the Nürburgring Endurance Series as the starting driver. With a good reaction time and clever line selection in turn 1, the 35-year-old made his way to eighth in the yellow and blue #6 Mercedes-AMG GT3. Metzger made his first early pit stop after just five laps.
This tactic should pay off as the race progresses. Metzger drove consistently fast lap times with new tires and handed the steering wheel to Hubert Haupt in a promising setting shortly before the break. Because of the time spent in difficult duels, the owner of the team changed positions several times, but constantly remained in the top ten.
Final driver Patrick Assenheimer, who was allowed to interfere in the event from lap 21, started the final stage of the race in sixth place. Not much happened in the last hour. Essenheimer managed to make up a few seconds for the fifth, but there was not enough time for a decisive attack.
The season in the NLS for head racing team Bilstein is now over. But in other series, crucial weeks await us. The penultimate weekend of the DTM will continue in Hockenheim next weekend, and a week later both the DTM final at Norisring and the end of the season for the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Championship will take place in Barcelona.
Hubert Haupt, owner of HRT and Haupt Racing Team Bilstein #6
“The race was mixed. Unfortunately, given the current performance balance, our car is simply not at eye level. That’s unacceptable from a team point of view or from a driver’s point of view for me. Under the circumstances, the P6 is fine.”
Manuel Metzger, Haupt Racing Team Bilstein #6
“Actually, we planned more for today. Unfortunately we had traffic in qualifying so we didn’t get a perfect lap and that was just enough for 10th. At first we made good progress. Overall the pace was very good overall, but in the end it was a race Mixed up we can’t be satisfied with.”
Patrick Assenheimer, Haupt Racing Team Bilstein #6
“It’s been a tough weekend, even if we did a flawless job. The team gave us another great car. Unfortunately, we can’t keep up with the current rating. So, sixth place is fine and a nice finish. Let’s see what next year brings.”
Uli Fritz, Managing Director of Haupt Racing Team GmbH
“We would have liked more than P6 at the end of the VLN season, but in the end it’s not possible today. We got stuck in traffic and definitely had to struggle with the car’s rating by the current BoP. However, I would like to thank the drivers and team, who have done a great job throughout The whole season. We are now using the break to gather ourselves and come back stronger next year.”
