M3 is coming: Apple reportedly has plans for October

2023 has already been an eventful year for the Mac — but according to a new media report, Apple is likely planning more new products for October. The introduction of the next generation of M3 processor is under discussion. This can be installed in the new iMac, and in the 13-inch variants of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. However, it has not yet been decided if this will happen in October as part of an event or if Apple will inform media representatives via a press release. The traditional event for the presentation of new iPhones and a new generation of Apple Watch is planned for September.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gorman relies on sources inside Apple for his reporting. According to his information, the M3 will be Apple’s first silicon in a three-nanometer design. At the end of 2022, Apple’s contract manufacturer TSMC began production for the first time. Compared with the M2 generation based on 5nm, M3 is said to be more energy efficient and powerful.

With the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, Apple will be relatively early in October with an update. Devices with M2 were only available in mid-2022 – more than a year and a half have passed since the M1. The M2 generation update ended with the M2 Pro and M2 Max as well as the M2 Ultra in June — however, supply chain issues and the Covid shutdown in China have caused Apple to fall a little behind schedule. With its October release, Apple can stick to the old schedules.

On the other hand, for the 24-inch iMac, an update is long overdue. There hasn’t been a new model since it was revealed in April 2021 — Apple seems to be skipping the M2 generation. Gurman doesn’t expect a larger iMac to return until 2024 — it’s said to have a 30- or 32-inch screen. The first iMac will be bigger with Apple silicon. The 27-inch figure that appeared recently still has an Intel processor.

In January of this year, Apple has already introduced the M2 Pro and M2 Max, which are sold as the MacBook Pro with 14- and 16-inch displays, as well as the new Mac Mini with the M2 and M2 Pro. In June, M2 Ultra completes the line of processors. Apple introduced the 15-inch MacBook Air and the second generation Mac Studio at its WWDC developer conference. In addition, a new Mac Pro was introduced, which installed Apple Silicon for the first time.

Gurman doesn’t expect new iPad Pro models until 2024, then for the first time with an OLED screen. However, it cannot be ruled out that Apple will update the iPad Air.
