Xherdan El Shugairi (30)’s influence on Olympique Lyonnais has been manageable so far. He only scored one goal and one assist in ten matches, and of course they were expecting more from the Swiss Power Cube. But his time will come. At least that’s what his coach Peter Boss (57) thinks.
“He can do better, that’s clear,” said the Dutchman in the run-up to the Europa League match against Sparta Prague. “He’s a player who has a certain level of technique and loves to play in tight spaces.” It is precisely these qualities that correspond to the philosophy of the 57-year-old. The Dutchman loves to press hard when the ball is with his opponent and wants to keep the leather in his ranks for as long as possible. A style of play that undoubtedly requires tech-savvy players.
“It will get better”
The entire team of coaches is in regular talks with the 30-year-old to get the best out of him. And the president himself is convinced that Shaqiri will find his style: “I’m sure he will get better,” says Boss.
The chance to do so is already Thursday night against the Czech runner-up from Prague. Lyon are currently unbeaten at the top of Group A and can secure their place in the knockout stage with a win. (Che)
