Despite international criticism for its crackdown on unwanted migrants, the UK wants to temporarily house more people on ships. Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made the announcement in Dover on Monday. Two more boats are to be purchased to accommodate a total of 1,000 people, Sunak said.
One of the first boats will soon dock at Portland Harbor in southern England. “With courage and determination, the government can solve this problem,” Sunak said. “And we use every means available to us.”
The British government wants to prevent the entry of unwanted immigrants with stricter laws. According to critics, the plan amounts to an asylum ban: anyone arriving in the UK through unwanted channels, regardless of refugee status, should be detained and deported to Rwanda or another country deemed safe.
Sunak said his plan against “illegal” migration is working. The number of irregular registrations fell in January and May – for the first time in years.
Observers point out that poor weather conditions can also lead to collapse, and that they dare to make dangerous crossings during the summer months. There is now a repatriation agreement with Albania. Especially last year a large number of immigrants came from there.
