At 8:30 p.m. on March 26, 2022, the lights went out in Basel for an hour. At least for famous sights like Basel Cathedral and the city gates, but also on the central Rhine bridges. In Aarau, the sights of Obertorturm, Stadtmuseum and Stadtkirche as well as the Eniwa and Holzmarkt power plant will remain in the dark at the same time.
The two cities thus join the global environmental campaign “Earth Hour”. Darkness is meant to indicate a waste of resources and to make people think. This campaign was launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature in Australia in 2007.
In a media statement, the President of the Basel Region Beit Janz (SP) expressed the hope that many people would also participate and turn off the lights in their homes for an hour. The city councilor of Aarau wrote in its statement: The symbolic action should also invite the residents of Aarau to make their contribution to the cause of climate protection.
This year’s Earth Hour was marked by the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity to be held in Kunming, China. At this conference, questions regarding the design of biodiversity protection in the coming years will be discussed, with a decision on a ten-year plan. (sda/bae)
