  • Several suppliers of Apple and Tesla have discontinued parts of their production in China.
  • They cited government restrictions on energy supplies as the reason.
  • China wants to achieve its climate goals by reducing electricity consumption.

Apple supplier Unimicron Technology Corp said Sunday it will leave production lines at three of its factories in China flat through Thursday. The effect is limited as production is increased in other factories.

However, the forced breaks in the supplier companies hit the car and electronics companies at an inopportune time. There has been a massive shortage of materials worldwide for several months, with electronic components particularly affected.

Concraft Holding Group, which makes parts for iPhone headphones, among other things, won’t produce anything until Thursday and will use parts from its warehouse to meet demand. The Nikkei daily reported that Foxconn Eson Precision Engineering will shutter its production lines through Friday.

The central government in Beijing wants to cut electricity consumption in the People’s Republic of China by three percent this year in order to achieve its climate goals. Provincial governments have recently tightened their electricity consumption requirements again. In some counties, residents are not allowed to use kettles or microwaves, and malls must close early.

China has the largest carbon dioxide emissions in the world. Thus, the global fight against climate change depends to a large extent on the actions taken by the state.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the United Nations Climate Change Summit in late 2020 that the country will reduce carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by more than 65 percent by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. According to the planning body “NDRC”, Only 10 out of 30 regions on the Chinese mainland achieved their energy saving targets in the first six months of this year. For this, the authority announced harsh penalties in mid-September.

Climate targets are offset by increased industrial demand. Total electricity generation through August was actually about 10 percent higher than it was in the same period the previous year. Another obstacle for Beijing is the coal shortage. Deliveries to China are severely restricted due to a trade dispute with Australia.
