The European Championship quarter-final between favourites Spain and Germany got off to a rocky start. Less than five minutes had been played when Spain's young midfielder Pedri was lying on the ground, his face twisted in pain. What happened?
Toni Kroos prevents the Spaniards from quickly counter-attacking with a strong foul on the 21-year-old. Kroos hits Pedri squarely in the knee, but the English referee left his cards close early in the match. Kroos runs away without warning.

But for Pedri, the game was over too early. After a short period of care, the midfielder realized he could no longer continue. National coach Luis de la Fuente replaced him in the eighth minute with Leipzig mercenary Dani Olmo. The youngster leaves the field in tears.

And Toni Kroos? A little later, he was lucky again because referee Taylor took a rather generous stance in the opening phase. On the other hand, the German playmaker thwarts the next Spanish hope: he stands right on the foot of Lamine Yamal. But here too, Kroos gets away without a card. His teammate Antonio Rudiger receives the first warning shortly after.
On the other hand, Spanish football fans will likely complain that after a few minutes and two booking-worthy fouls from Toni Kroos, Germany should have been allowed only ten players on the pitch. (APO)
