By marrying a commoner, the princess would leave the court. She and her husband want to live in the United States from now on. According to media reports, the two want to abandon the traditional rituals of members of the imperial court at their wedding ceremony. Among other things, they refused to pay compensation that would normally go to members of the imperial family who marry commoners.
The rules of imperial succession in Japan state that Mako loses his title after the wedding. However, Emperor Akihito’s granddaughter does not claim the throne anyway. This is reserved for males.

With a huge media frenzy – and after three years of delaying the wedding – Komuro returned home from the United States on Monday. Japanese media had already taken this as a sign that the wedding date might be announced soon.
