The Italians lost the last and decisive group game against Kazakhstan in Helsinki 2:5 (1:2, 1:1, 0:2) and are therefore last in Group A in the German preliminary round. In Group B Austria won brilliantly in the evening. 5: 3 (0-1, 0-1, 5-1) against England, leading 3-1 in 13 minutes. This leaves Britain firmly in last place in the group.
Canada, the reigning world champions, surprisingly lost the second game against Denmark 2: 3 (0: 2, 1: 0, 1: 1) in the evening. Earlier, the Canadians lost to Switzerland 6-3. Nevertheless, the title contender has already qualified for the quarter-finals, which the Danes can now look forward too.
Canada’s surprise loss is enough for Germany to avoid formidable quarter-final opponents as group runners-up in their last preliminary round match against Switzerland on Tuesday (11.20 am / Sport1 and MagentaSport) and continue in Helsinki.
In Tampere, the Czech Republic beat the USA 1-0 (1-0, 0-0, 0-0) to advance to the quarterfinals. The U.S. needs one more point in Tuesday’s quarterfinal against Norway. Group B hosts Finland and Sweden have already qualified for the quarter-finals.
