Ahead of the International Donors Conference for Afghanistan, Great Britain pledged an additional 28 286 million (8 338.5 million) to the crisis-stricken country. “This new funding will be sent through UN partners and trusted NGOs. No funds will go directly to the Taliban,” British Foreign Secretary Lis Truss said on Wednesday. More than $ 4 billion is set to be raised for the country at a donor conference jointly organized with the United Nations on Thursday.
Britain has already provided 28 286 million to Afghanistan in the 2021-2022 budget. According to Truss, the aid from the UK has supported more than 60 hospitals. In addition, nearly 4.5 million people have received emergency food assistance through the World Food Program (WFP).
The United Nations said in January that it would need $ 4.4 billion from donors this year to fund humanitarian needs in Afghanistan – the highest amount ever requested for a country. It is estimated that about ten million children in Afghanistan are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
