Last week, Intel introduced new “Meteor Lake” generation Core Ultra 100 CPUs, which are optimized for efficiency and AI and are said to deliver up to twice the graphics performance, for which there are new P-Cores and E-Cores. – The cores in the new “Intel 4” node are present. According to a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the original plan may have been to develop a Meteor Lake processor with two CPUs.
As purported images of Meteor Lake-P tech samples from hardware leaker @yuuki_ans supposedly show in a direct comparison, it appears there was also a “thermal test build” that had two CPU bits on a single chip instead of one. At first glance, the images look almost identical, but the alternate variant has two so-called tiles, where the single CPU tile for the compute die would normally be placed.
Meteor Lake: Were two CPU cores originally planned?
high Tom’s devices This strongly suggests that Intel was interested in using two CPU boxes instead of just one. However, this does not necessarily mean that the tiles in this particular technical sample are fully functional, since the whole thing is, according to the wording, only intended for thermal tests.
Accordingly, the report is only speculating what these two parts of the CPU would have contained if Intel had continued with the design. Similarities can be seen with AMD’s two chips for the 12- and 16-core Ryzen CPUs. Meanwhile, Intel’s solution appears to be about 10 to 15 percent wider on the right than on the left, indicating that they are actually two different tiles, one containing the P cores and the other containing the E cores. This would make different nodes possible For both, according to the report.
The leak explicitly refers to Meteor Lake-P, which is one of the variants of the Meteor Lake architecture that Intel has not yet released and which is rumored to be canceled according to Tom’s Hardware. It is not clear, according to the report, how Meteor Lake-P will differ from the recently introduced Meteor Lake-H and -U. Meanwhile, the previous Raptor Lake-P had as many cores as the Meteor Lake-H on its CPU with six P cores and eight E cores.
