ERC Ingolstadt is the first freshman for the dominant chaser Red Bull Munich in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).
On Matchday 34, Bayern beat German champions Eisprien Berlin 4-2 (1-1, 1-1, 2-0) and relegated Adler Mannheim to second place in the standings.
Marco Friedrich, Charles Bertrand, Ben Marshall and Mirko Hövelin scored for Ingolstadt, who claimed their 21st win of the season. Meanwhile, Marcel Neubels and Maximilian Heim gave Berlin a 2-1 lead. The Polar Bears, who have struggled since the start of the season, failed to confirm a fine 5-0 performance over bottom-placed Betigheim shortly before Christmas and take another step from the bottom of the table.
On the other hand, Ingolstadt is 12 points behind Red Bull Munich after 32 matches. However, the table leaders have a chance to increase their lead again in the evening match against Augsburg Panthers.
A few hours earlier, Adler Mannheim had surprisingly lost a feather in the first set of the table. The 2019 German champions lost 3-1 (0-0, 0-2, 1-1) to Fishtown Penguins Bremerhaven. Ryan McInnes’ makeshift goal wasn’t enough.
The Wolfsburg Grizzlies also suffered bankruptcy. The play-off contenders lost 5-3 (2-1, 1-2, 0-2) at home to Kolner High, whose form has recently improved.
