Co-hosts Australia can continue their dream of winning the World Cup on home soil. The national football team won 2-0 (0-0) against Denmark in the round of 16 at Australia Stadium in front of 75,784 fans.

Strong Caitlin Ford (29th minute) and Haley Raso (70th) scored for head coach Tony Gustavson’s team. In the quarter-finals, the Matildas will meet either France or Morocco in Brisbane on Saturday (9:00am CEST), who will play for promotion in Adelaide this Tuesday (1:00pm CEST/ZDF).

Although the Danes, led by new Bayern player Bernil Harder, got off to a good start in the round of 16, Australia took the lead. After a long pass from Mary Fowler, Forte scored to make it 1-0. Moments later, the goalscorer missed his second goal.

After a change of sides, the Matildas took the lead for long periods and not much came from Denmark. Razo’s low shot made it 2-0 and the 80th-minute substitution of superstar Sam Kerr brought further applause from the stadium. The Chelsea captain was on the pitch for the first few minutes of the match following his injury.
