Even under coach Stephen Baumgart, 1. FC Köln simply cannot beat their fearsome rival TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Rheinlander lost 0:5 (0:1) in the Friday night match in the Bundesliga in Sinsheim – this was FC’s seventh consecutive defeat to Kreischgauer. At the same time, a series of five matches ended in which Baumgart was unbeaten in front of 14,309 spectators. Ahles Bebo (31/49), Christoph Baumgartner (51), Dennis Geiger (74) and Stefan Bosch (87) scored a goal for the superior Hoffenheim team. TSG could not achieve the highest victory in the history of the Bundesliga: it was 6-0 on March 31, 2018 – against Cologne.

Once again, TSG poured a huge amount into Cologne, who came out of the break completely disoriented. FC celebrated their last victory in the German Bundesliga (3-2) against Hoffenheim in April 2015 at home, after which there were 11 failed attempts. With his third win of the season, Hoffenheim improved to eighth in the table, one point behind Cologne.

The goal is the European Cup

While Baumgart missed his first away win of the season with Cologne, teammate Sebastian Hoeness was able to breathe a sigh of relief after achieving the highest win under him. The 39-year-old was under pressure again after the 3-1-1 loss to Stuttgart. In addition, sponsor Dietmar Hopp announced that he expects TSG to play “permanently” in the European Cup. “We want to get back there without announcing it right away and now,” said sporting director Alexander Rosen before the start of the interview at DAZN.

Like the European League contenders, both teams did not necessarily appear in the eighth round. Rafael Czichos made his first big thrill leading to Baumgart’s active freeze on the sidelines with a pass back from the left side. And the ball landed a perfect cross on the free-standing Andrej Kramaric (8), but goalkeeper Timo Horn saved his shot brilliantly.

Chichus replaced Jonas Hector as captain, and the former national player had fallen ill. Injured midfielder Elias Sakhiri, who has scored three of his team’s last four goals, was also largely absent.

In the next strange scene, Baumgartner of Hoffenheim is the victim: Jorge Meri hits the Austrian with the ball full in the face in a free kick. The 22-year-old struggled again and tried to restructure his side’s attack.

Andrej Kramaric proved once again that he is the preparer of excellence for TSG. Croatia’s 2018 World Cup runners-up tore down Cologne’s defense with a set-piece, Bebo allowed Horne to run into the void and push him to make the score 1-0.

Richards gets a chance

Up to this point, the guests had played well, but could not overcome the newly formed central defense of TSG. Hoeness has brought veteran Kevin Vogt back to the bench for the first time this season, as did young Chris Richards. Kevin Akpogoma and Stefan Bosch have taken care of largely ineffective FC strikers Anthony Modeste and Sebastian Anderson.

A double strike immediately after the break left Cologne in a state of panic: Bebo with the shovel against the troubled FC defense and Bammgartner also from short distance scored the second and third goals against a visiting team whose strong start to the season is rarely remembered. (mss/dpa)
