Attack is the best defence: An Australian man survived a crocodile attack by bravely biting off his attacker’s eyelid.
no time? Blue News sums it up for you
- An Australian farmer was lucky enough to fend off a crocodile attack.
- In his fight for survival, he said he bit the crocodile’s eyelid.
- After spending a month in hospital, the man should soon be able to walk again.
Thanks to a lot of luck and an unusual defense method, an Australian farmer was able to fend off an attack by a crocodile. Like the Australian news site ABC mentionedCattle farmer Colin Devereux was attacked by a three-metre-long reptile while repairing a fence.
A saltwater crocodile bit off his right foot near a small lake, “shaking it like a rag doll” and dragging it toward the water. Derveaux initially tried to kick the animal in the ribs. When that didn’t help, he backed off a little.
Eight seconds of agony is eternity
His fight for survival was ultimately successful because the rancher grabbed the animal by the eyelid and bit it hard. “My situation was not rosy at all,” says Colin Devereaux. “But by chance, my teeth collided with his eyelid. “It was so thick, it was like I was holding on to skin.”
Devereaux pulled the crocodile’s eyelid as hard as he could with his teeth until the reptile let him go. The whole thing only took eight seconds, but to the rancher it seemed like an eternity.
130 km to the nearest hospital
After the attack, Devereaux managed to escape to his car and barely stopped the bleeding with a towel and rope. His brother then drove him more than 130 kilometers to the nearest hospital, where Devereux has been treated for a month. Bacterial infection of the wound was a particular problem.
Deveraux has now undergone a skin transplant and can feel his toes again. Doctors are confident that he will be able to leave the hospital on foot in the next few days.
Things did not go well for the crocodile. Care was taken not to attack and “remove” anyone else.
