Greta Thunberg demonstrates against wind farms in Oslo

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg demonstrated in Oslo against a Norwegian wind farm. According to a ruling, this violated the rights of indigenous peoples.

Thunberg and dozens of other activists blocked the entrance to Norway’s Finance Ministry on Tuesday. They partially restrained themselves, NTB news agency reported. The police officers took action against the sit-in and, according to their statements, removed the demonstrators. The activists had already shut down the Ministry of Energy on Monday.

The protests are directed against a wind farm on the Fössen peninsula on Norway’s west coast. According to the NTB, the country’s highest court ruled in October 2021 that the wind farm violated the rights of indigenous peoples in the region.

Many reindeer herders live in the affected area. However, nothing had happened since then, and it had now been more than 500 days. Therefore, activists are calling on the government to remove the wind farm.

Thunberg told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that she wasn’t protesting green energy, but that she was protesting violations of indigenous peoples’ rights. “It is absolutely absurd that this is happening. It seems that the Norwegian state is ignoring it,” said the Swedish.

Greta Thunberg sees conflict as a case of “green colonialism”. Climate protection should not be done on the backs of these groups, it should be done fairly and equitably.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Storr told the broadcaster that a political solution was being worked on. He takes the concerns of the local reindeer herders in particular very seriously.
