Quantity instead of class?
If you have any doubts about whether 32 GB of RAM is enough or not, you should choose a kit with 64 GB – this has been the case for many years. However, this is no longer valid since 2023, due to the presence of a new intermediate size: this is made possible thanks to 24 GB memory chips, located between the classic 16 and 32 GB sizes. Eight of these components in a single unit hold 24GB, and as a pair for the best performance in multi-channel playback, the capacity doubles to 48GB – most of the products in this comparison test are organized this way. Below we will also check the “classic” 64 GB RAM kits and a kit in which 16 new 24 GB memory sticks are installed per module, resulting in a double capacity of 48 GB, i.e. 96 GB. Huge. This is the highest storage density currently available in the DDR5 desktop category: only clusters with four volumes or registers dedicated to servers offer higher capacities.
Everything new, so much better
As a loyal PCGH reader, you may not have missed the fact that the last RAM test was performed over a year ago. Therefore, we have a lot to catch up on and we will start working on Part 2 immediately after this article, as a larger test field of 32 GiByte clusters awaits us. However, it is important that we at least update our testing methodology and rating system so that we can continue to test RAM in a contemporary manner in 2024.
