Moderate budget rule Zoff
A fine against Red Bull – the discount is useless
The Formula 1 racing team Red Bull Racing has admitted it overstepped its budget a bit in 2021 and is therefore escaping a relatively light penalty.
Red Bull has to pay $7 million to exceed the 2021 budget limit – which is limited in the wind tunnel period.
World Champion Max Verstappen’s team has to pay $7 million and lose ten percent of development time in the wind tunnel over the next twelve months. This was announced by the FIA, the World Automobile Federation, on the Friday before the Mexican Grand Prix (Sunday 9:00pm CET/sky).
In addition, Red Bull made procedural errors, which Aston Martin has also been accused of. A penalty kick against Sebastian Vettel’s team is due to be announced later on Friday. Both teams had previously reached an agreement with the FIA, the so-called acceptable breach agreement is an admission of guilt and prevents tougher penalties from being imposed.
Basically, the FIA distinguishes between minor and major budget overruns. The maximum is five percent of the amount allowed, which is about $7.5 million in 2021. According to a statement by the World League, Red Bull’s violation was 1.6 percent.
According to Red Bull, it was initially below the $150 million limit, but the violation was $2.2 million. Parts and catering costs are said to have contributed to this, as did severance payments, continued wages for sick employees and additional tax payments.
Tougher penalties could only have been imposed if Red Bull had appealed the FIA ruling. There had previously been speculation about a point deduction, which could have influenced the 2021 World Cup decision: Verstappen won the title by just eight points over Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
However, the fine under the budget cap and the already short wind tunnel time restriction definitely hit the team. Since the test options are mainly based on athletic performance: the more successful the team, the less time it has in the wind tunnel. As the constructors’ world champion in 2022, Red Bull really has its drawbacks here compared to the competition. (AFP)
