- 50 fires broke out across Greece.
- The fires were fueled by high temperatures and strong winds.
- Authorities have urged people to stay away from the fire areas.
For example, several villages on the island of Serifos had to be evacuated. Forest fires are still out of control. In addition, strong winds will make the use of firefighting helicopters more difficult, Greek media reported. They point to the responsible authorities.
A fire department spokesman told television that winds of more than 100 kilometers per hour made the operation more difficult. According to forecasters, the gusty winds will not subside until Sunday.
A fire also broke out in a mountainous nature reserve north of Athens. According to authorities, the forest fire was contained on Saturday.
Forest fires are not uncommon in Greece. But in recent years they have become more destructive as summers have become hotter, drier and windier.
After severe forest fires last summer and Greece's warmest winter ever, authorities have tightened their strategy against forest and wildfires.
