Match reportNow Real Madrid knows again what it means to lose! After five wins at the start of La Liga, Real Madrid’s winning streak has come to an end, and of all that happened in the city derby away to Atletico. Because the royal team allowed itself to be surprised three times against the Rojiblancos, Toni Kroos’ goal was of no use. Because in the end the score ended 3-1 for coach Diego Simeone and his team.

Real Madrid loses to Atletico in all teams
Madrid. Defeat is always painful. But especially when it happens in a city derby. Real Madrid began the sixth round of La Liga after five victories and lost the “Derby Madrileño” for the first time in three meetings against Atletico. However, the defending Spanish champions can’t really complain after the defeat at the Metropolitano. In any case, the top spot in the league is gone for now – and in the hands of FC Barcelona.
As Alvaro Morata (4th, 46th) put his former club on the wrong foot at the start of the first and second half, the visitors played their part with harmless defensive behaviour. In addition, Antoine Griezmann scored without much resistance (18th minute), which meant that Toni Kroos’ goal before the break (35th minute) was no longer enough in the end.
Ancelotti relies on Kroos and Modric in the starting lineup
He is supposed to surprise coach Carlo Ancelotti with his squad. As expected, Lucas Vazquez, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Fran Garcia played in defense in front of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, while Ancelotti initially relied on Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, Kroos and Luka Modric in midfield. The latter two veterans have already had to succumb to their Joker roles in the season so far. Rodrigo Goes and Jody Bellingham started attackingly against Atletico.
Atletico strikes quickly – Kroos’ goal revives hopes again
Real Madrid had hoped to gain more control with the coaching staff selected outside the Estadio Metropolitano – but the Rojiblancos stunned the Whites from the start. The home team played it on the left side. As Los Blancos allowed Samuel Leno to curl in a perfect cross, Morata converted from close range to give Atletico a 1-0 lead after just four minutes, and Kepa could only look back.

Coach Diego Simeone’s team looked much better in the match and took the lead in the 18th minute. Once again, Real Madrid did not attack decisively enough, as Saul Niguez’s cross from the left side reached Griezmann in the center of the penalty area. The Frenchman got up and headed off. Because the header was placed precisely in the bottom right corner, Kepa was unable to keep up with the ball. After that, the Merengues gradually recovered and took control of the match that was previously against them.
Result: After a cross from Vazquez, Kroos got the ball in the back area, put it above Marcos Llorente’s foot, and then shot the ball past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak into the net with a powerful shot from the left (minute 35). With the score 1:2 from Real Madrid’s point of view, we entered the break. But hope for the “Remontada” suddenly became present.
Morata gives Real another setback – and bankruptcy
After the break, Ancelotti made a big change: Modric’s appearance ended, but Joselu was supposed to give more presence to the attack. However, the defending Spanish champions came out of the locker room weak. Less than 35 seconds had been played when Griezmann passed to Saul on the left wing, who gained space to cross and passed it straight to Morata in front of goal. The Atletico striker took advantage of the moment and left Kepa with no chance – as Real’s defense allowed him to head the shot unchallenged.
After winning 3-1, the hosts were able to handle things more calmly and play their usual game. Simeone’s squad were barely letting anything happen and were waiting for a counterattack. But Real Madrid did not give up and returned to the match better. Los Blancos tried to do so through Rodrigo, whose shot was initially saved, but it fell to Aurélien Chouamini, who came on for Camavinga, who narrowly missed from 25 meters (64′).

As Atletico held firm, the visitors continued to have a difficult time – and they tried again from distance, as Rudiger’s shot from 25 meters missed the target (70th). Real Madrid worked in vain for the next goal, and after more than 96 minutes it was all over in the Metropolitano – and the deserved winners of the derby were Atletico.
