fire:Australia can’t control wildfires
Live from TBA news channel
SYDNEY (AP) — Wildfires are raging in Australia’s New South Wales state. Fires surrounding the village of Tambarura, northwest of Sydney, have already damaged several homes and properties, Australian broadcaster ABC reported, citing the fire department.
The fire has spread rapidly since Wednesday night and is now spreading over 12,000 hectares. About 20 houses are threatened. It said glowing ash could be blown into the air far from the fire’s tip and hit buildings.
“We’re not going to stop the fire, but it’s going to give these buildings a better chance of survival,” said Rob Rodgers, a fire department spokesman. Emergency services were deployed, among others, with three firefighting planes and several helicopters. Evacuation centers have been set up for local residents. According to officials, the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike on Sunday.
