After more than five years as the undisputed starting player in the BVB, Romain Burki was left out of the starting line-up and then completely out of the squad. Then Gregor Coppel was put in front of his nose – and after a missed substitution he was put in the stands for a whole year. “If you don’t perform well, you will quickly become worthless,” he said bitterly.

His new station smiled at first. Bürki moved to the USA, joining St. Louis Cardinals. Meanwhile, critics had to lose their smiles.

Fight for the championship

In his first year in the MLS, Romain Burki plays for the championship title with St. Louis. Almost half of the regular season is over – and the team from Missouri is the leader in the Western Conference. The table is still somewhat distorted. St. Louis leads Seattle by a point but still has three games to play. With a three-point deficit but five games remaining, defending champions Los Angeles can still edge them.
