Exoplanet with day-night aspect: space telescope detects planet TOI 700 e in the habitable zone

The planet in question is called TOI 700 e; Where TOI 700 is the dwarf star around which an exoplanet orbits. This is about 100 light-years away from our solar system in the constellation of the Swordfish. It is the last one found in the red dwarf star system by astronomers using the Tess (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) space telescope. TOI 700 b, c and d planets have already been discovered before.

However, what makes TOI 700 e interesting is that it is located in the habitable zone around the dwarf star and is about 95 percent the size of Earth and is a rocky planet. With it removed, it is possible that the water is present in liquid form.

The TESS space telescope searches for exoplanets in the vastness of space.

“This is one of the few systems known to have multiple minor planets in habitable zones.”said Emily Gilbert, a postdoctoral researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. “This is what makes the TOI 700 system so exciting for further investigations. Planet e is about 10 percent smaller than Planet d, so the system also shows how additional TESS observations are helping us find ever smaller worlds.”

Planet D has already been discovered in 2020. As with its neighboring planets, researchers assume that the planets in the system are tidal related. This means that they only orbit one side of their star and orbit very slowly around themselves. The recently discovered exoplanet TOI 700 e needs a full orbit around its dwarf star. All this happens in 28 days.

Because of its size, it took scientists at Goddard Space Flight Center every year to learn about the planet. The data previously captured by the space telescope was too faint to be sure. Now further investigations with the help of observatories on Earth and other space telescopes should bring more information about this intriguing star system.
