Even in the European League “Consolation Cup”, Borussia Dortmund cannot survive and lose to the underdog from Glasgow.
Dortmund was envisioning Memorial Night differently. In their 1,000th match at Westfalen Stadium, the Germans met Glasgow Rangers in the Europa League. However, there was no reason to celebrate: after failing in the Champions League, they deceived themselves at a lower level.
The BVB suffered a cold shower in the first leg of the Round of 16 shortly before the break: after the team started strong, Dan-Axel Zagado slashed a handball in the penalty area. James Tavernier easily converted the subsequent penalty kick (38), and Gregor Coppel had no chance.
After only 3 minutes, the Scots scored again: top scorer Alfredo Morelos scored 2-0 (41).
Anyone who thought a tea break would awaken Dortmund with Swiss Kopel in goal and Manuel Akanji in defense (until the 55th minute) was wrong. They only let Rangers, who didn’t have Cedric Iten on the squad, continue: Jon Lundstram made it 3-0 (49).
A little later, Zagado made his black evening perfect by scoring an unfortunate own goal (55th place) – and the anniversary disaster was a reality.
Judd Bellingham (51) and Rafael Guerrero (82) are still doing some cosmetic work to make it 2-4 and give their side a little hope of the return leg in a week’s time.
