  • Researchers at ETH Zurich have achieved something amazing.
  • They have detected surface waves on a planet other than Earth for the first time ever.
  • As a result, researchers at ETH Zurich have gained surprising insights into the structure of Mars’ crust.

Thanks to the impact of two meteorites on Mars, researchers were able to assess the spread of sky waves along the surface of the planet for the first time. It turns out that the planet’s crust is organized differently than expected.

New insights into the temple

So far, only a point measurement of Mars’ crust has been available, Doyeon Kim, a senior assistant at the ETH Institute of Geophysics, wrote in a study published in Science. Three layers of cortex are revealed.

So far, only deep earthquakes have been recorded on Mars. Researchers have now been able to document the crater after a meteorite impact.

Surface waves, now evaluated for the first time, paint a different picture, Kim continues to write. The crust of Mars between the meteor impact sites and the seismometer, which were about 3,500 and 7,500 km apart, respectively, has a very uniform structure on average.
