The decision is made! Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (69) won the run-off against his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu (74) and remains in office. According to the official final result, Erdogan won nearly 52 percent of the vote. Kilicdaroglu got around 48 percent (more in the run-off here).
And not only his supporters in Turkey celebrate the victory, but also many voters in Essen! On Sunday evening (May 28), a number of cars drove around the city carrying Turkish flags, portraits of Erdoğan and AKP scarves, causing traffic chaos on Limbecker Platz.
Essen: Turks celebrate Erdogan’s election victory at Limbecker Platz
Dozens of cars honked their horns, some stopped in the right lane, played music and chanted Erdogan’s slogans and slogans. Police had to block off the streets around Limpecker Platz during the festivities.
The ban has since been lifted. Across Germany, Essen is Erdogan’s stronghold in other European countries.
In the regular elections two weeks ago, about 80 percent of Turks living here voted for the long-serving head of state.
