Entering the Round of 16 – Tottenham ensure group win in the last minute – Sport

  • Pierre-Emile Hojberg won 2-1 in the 95th minute for Tottenham to not only advance in the Champions League but also top Group D.
  • Thanks to a 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon in the last group game, Frankfurt also reached the Round of 16.
  • While Sporting can continue to play in the second round of the European League, Marseille’s European adventure is over.
  • An overview of the game’s events in other groups can be found here.

Marseille risked it all in the latter stages: although the south of France finished third in the group with a 1-1 victory over Tottenham and could continue the season in the Europa League next year, they desperately pursued the winning goal. They were actually very close to the dream of a Champions League knockout stage: Ivan Perisic saved first against Alexis Sanchez for his losing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (83). Of all things, former Arsenal defender Sid Kolasinac should have made it 2-1 for Marseille in the 87th minute – that would have meant the end of Spurs in the first division.

Instead, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg rewarded his colors with a full counterattack for a very mediocre performance. The Dane, who had already hit the crossbar in the 81st minute, delighted Tottenham in the 95th minute and took the lead in the group.

Spurs are inactive for a long time

Without suspended coach Antonio Conte, who represented him on the touchline of assistant Christian Stellini, the third in the Premier League would have started the game passively at the Stade Velodrome. Contrary to declaring their desire to play to win, the Londoners withdrew and allowed the French to control the ball.

And Chancel Mbemba penalized this with a header just before the end of the first half to make it 1-0. The reaction came after a free kick in the 54th minute: Clement Lenglet also scored a high ball from Perisic to make it 1-1.

Sowing with Frankfurt in the round of 16

With a shift from 0:1 to 2:1, Frankfurt also reached the round of 16. In front of Sporting, it seems that Djibril Sow’s team did not go as planned in Lisbon. Despite a valiant display by the European champions, it was Portugal that took the lead in the 39th minute. Sow sadly nodded a cross to Arthur Gomez, who scored to make it 1-0.

But the Hessians were able to respond: an embarrassing handball by Sporting captain Sebastian Coates in the penalty area gave them the equalizer an hour later from Daichi Kamada’s penalty kick. And things improved for Sow and Co: Randall Kolo Mane subtly defeated his opponent after just 10 minutes and scored from a tight angle to make it 2-1.

If the score remained 1-1 in Marseille, Eintracht would have been the group winner. The misfortune of Marseille turned into a fortune for Sporting. The Portuguese remain the consolation of the European League.
