The new British royal couple have made their first public appearance since the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s mourning period.
Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon welcomed Charles and his wife Camilla in Dunfermline, Scotland, in their usual kilts on Monday. To mark the Queen’s 70th Jubilee, Dunfermline was awarded a town charter this year along with many other British towns. At the site, the royal couple were happily greeted in the streets by a large number of onlookers who did not want to miss the arrival of the new monarch. He shook several hands, waved to the crowd and exchanged a few words with those present.
It will be the royal couple’s first official visit since the end of the week-long state mourning period, which is longer than the ten days of national mourning leading up to the monarch’s funeral. Charles, 73, spent time after the funeral at his home in Scotland. Like her mother, she is considered a great lover of northern Britain.
Both Charles and Camilla wanted to visit the medieval church in Dunfermline, about 30km northwest of Edinburgh, where many of Scotland’s previous kings are buried. A reception was later held at Holyrood Palace, Scotland’s royal residence, with representatives from India, Pakistan and other Asian communities living in the UK.
