BRUSSELS (dpa) – The controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline on the Baltic Sea cannot currently be approved, according to Foreign Minister Annallina Birbock. Traffic light parties SPD, Greens and FDP agreed in the coalition agreement that European energy law applies to energy projects – “which means that, as things stand, this pipeline cannot be approved because it does not meet the requirements of European energy law,” the green politician said Sunday night. In the ZDF “Heat Journal” security issues are still in the room anyway. In addition, it was discussed between the USA and the former federal government that “this pipeline can no longer operate in the event of a further escalation”. It refers to the tense situation on the border between Russia and Ukraine.

The Baltic Sea pipeline from Russia to Germany was completed weeks ago. The Federal Network Agency has until the beginning of January to decide on a permit to operate the pipelines, with which up to 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be delivered from Russia to Germany annually. Barbock had spoken out against Nord Stream 2 on the campaign trail before the federal election, but new chancellor Olaf Schultz (SPD) has yet to take a clear position.
