Storms and torrential rains caused severe damage in Switzerland a few days ago. But other parts of Europe are also threatened by the storm. On Tuesday, a hailstorm forced the Emirates Boeing 777 to make an emergency landing!
The passenger plane took off from Malpensa Airport (I) in Milan. She was heading to New York (USA). Shortly after takeoff, the plane got stuck in a hailstorm, turned around and landed again in Milan just 90 minutes later. No one was harmed.
Weather conditions at departure are already suboptimal
According to the JACDEC Flight Safety Arrangement, the weather conditions at the take-off of the aircraft were not ideal, the aviation newspaper “Simple Flying” wrote.
As a rule, machines will withstand adverse weather conditions, but this was not the case on Tuesday: a hail storm caused serious damage to the Boeing 777.
Hail smashes pilots’ windshields
Landing a fully fueled Boeing 777 with passengers is not without problems, because: if not enough fuel is burned, it can lead to a difficult landing.
After returning, the plane had to fly over Milan airport for only an hour and a half. At 6:04 p.m., the machine touched Italian ground.
The hail shattered two windshields of the pilots and scratched the paint on several parts of the fuselage. The nose of the aircraft was also damaged, with a crack in the leading edge. Some repairs still need to be made before the plane can take off again. (une)
