There are already ten conservative candidates to succeed Johnson
The application deadline for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s successor is less than two days away. The number of candidates seeking his post is increasing.
After the ouster of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, ten conservative politicians have already applied to succeed him. Secretary of State Liz Truss and Commerce Secretary Benny Mordant announced the nominations on Sunday. “Our leadership needs to change. It should be less about the person at the helm and more about the ship,” tweeted Mordant, 49. He has made a name for himself as a staunch Brexit supporter and is popular among the party base.
This means five current Cabinet members are now in the running: in addition to Mordaunt and Truss, Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi, Transport Secretary Grant Shabbs and General Counsel Suella Braverman. According to media reports, the application period will last till Tuesday evening. Conservative Party members then select two candidates in several rounds of voting – party members then decide a run-off between them.
Former finance minister Rishi Sunak, backed by several influential Tories, is currently the bookies’ favourite. However, supporters of incumbent Prime Minister Johnson accuse him of betraying the head of government, the Sunday Observer newspaper reported. Other candidates include former cabinet members Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt, former foreign secretary Kimi Patenoch and foreign affairs committee chairman Tom Tugenhardt.
