Decathlete Neugebauer is clearly on his way to achieving the German record

Olympic runner Leo Neugebauer is on track to set a German record after the best decathlon start of his career. The 23-year-old leads the competition at the US College Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with 4,685 points. The athlete, who competes for FC Stuttgart, collected 94 points on the German night on Thursday compared to his German record a year ago.

Neugebauer feels 'fantastic'

“I feel good,” Neugebauer said. “I can't complain, after all I had the best day of my career. I would have liked to run the 400 meters a little faster, but my legs wouldn't allow it.”

At his best two weeks before his birthday

With a distance of 17.46 meters in the shot put, he set a new university record in the 2022 World Cup venues, and also took first place with 7.86 meters in the long jump and 2.07 meters in the high jump. Two weeks before his 24th birthday, he also ran the 100 meters in 10.64 seconds and the 400 meters in 48.03 seconds.

Neugebauer, who studies and trains in Austin at the University of Texas, is forgoing the European Championships in Rome for the U.S. College Championships.
