Curling in a wheelchair – because of the millimeters: catching up with a Swiss chair is not rewarded – Sports

  • Swiss wheelchair players have lost both games as of Tuesday at the Paralympic Games in Beijing.
  • In the “last chance match” against Latvia, they were not so lucky in the morning, so Switzerland could no longer reach the semi-finals.
  • Also in the second match against Norway there is a defeat.

Hans Burgner, Françoise Jakorod, Cynthia Matiz and Laurent Kneeupol lost 7:9 to Latvia. This was the fifth defeat in the sixth match of the round of Robben, which meant that Switzerland no longer had a chance to reach the semi-finals.

After losing 6-1 in the first half, the Swiss started a big sprint to catch up and, thanks to two three-man homes, took a 7-6 lead at times. In the end, Switzerland took the last stone with a score of 7:8.

However, the Latvians put pressure on so that Kneopol could only save the Swiss for the further end. Measurements had to be taken after his last stone – millimeters tip the scales to the detriment of Switzerland (see video above).

‘Still to work’

“It was exciting, but we made a lot of mistakes,” Matiz – who previously played badminton in Tokyo in the summer – said after the match. She was happy to be back after a long incapacitation, but she said, “We still have to work.” Despite the early exit, the rest of the matches are about “doing our best”.

But in the second match on Tuesday, no positive result was achieved either. There was a 5:8 defeat against the Norwegian team, and the match was decided between the fourth and sixth end: the Norwegians counted 5 stones, while Switzerland went empty-handed.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the last 3 matches of the Swiss football chair against the United States, Slovakia and Estonia will appear on the programme.
